Peer Support Specialist

Better Together ND is a dedicated Community Connect and Free Through Recovery provider for the State of North Dakota, focused on delivering essential care coordination, peer support, and recovery services tailored to individual needs. We are committed to empowering individuals to achieve their highest level of physical and mental well-being.

Note: This position requires the employee to reside in the Fargo, ND area.

Position Summary

The Peer Support Specialist is an individual with lived experience who offers hope, support, and advocacy to those on their journey to recovery and wellness. Working alongside Care Coordinators, the Peer Support Specialist assists and guides clients toward the identification and achievement of specific goals, ensuring success in the realms of recovery, housing, employment, and recidivism.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide non-judgmental, empathetic support and advocacy to individuals in recovery from mental health or substance use struggles.
  • Assist individuals in identifying and pursuing personal recovery goals and navigating the healthcare system.
  • Collaborate with local agencies and care teams to develop and implement individual treatment plans.
  • Assist with crisis management and intervention, maintaining availability by phone during crisis situations.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of client progress and community networking efforts.

Required Qualifications

  • Lived Experience: Self-identify as an individual with personal lived experience in recovery (mental health, substance use, or brain injury) or as a family member of an individual with such lived experience.
  • Education: High school diploma or general equivalency with the ability to read and write proficiently for professional documentation.
  • Licensure: Possession of a valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
  • Age: Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Training: Commitment to successfully complete a division-approved peer support training program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) designation.
  • Two to three years of personal recovery experience.
  • Work experience in case management, parole/probation, or addiction services.
  • Strong computer literacy and excellent interpersonal communication skills.

  • Pay: $18.00 – $20.00 per hour (based on experience and billable hour expectations).
  • Job Type: Part-time or Full-time options available.
  • Work Location: Remote/In-person (Fargo, ND). Work is performed in public settings rather than an office.
